Southeast Botanical Gardens in full bloom this summer

The Southeast Botanical Gardens has reopened its doors to the public after its unexpected closure in December 2010. Its regular operating hours are from 9:00 to 22:00, but this year, during the months of July and August, it opens even earlier, at 6:30 on Saturdays and Sundays. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the beautiful tropical plants and flowers covered in fresh morning dew.

The botanical gardens feature more than 250 species of trees and plants that thrive in Okinawa’s subtropical climate. Take a walk in the botanical gardens and the water garden and soak up the lush greenery. You might even run into some animals such as the common squirrel monkey and the capybara, the largest rodent in the world. Be on the lookout for the baobab, a tree native to Africa, Madagascar and Australia. Commonly found on the savannas of Africa, this unique tree species can now be seen right here in Okinawa.

Your visit to the Southeast Botanical Gardens can be enhanced by joining their special programs through which you can play nature games, engage in craft activities and learn more about the flora and fauna. Sessions for kids and adults are available; everyone can be a part of the fun!

In addition, the place plays host to private events and parties. Holding up to 1,000 people, the grounds of the Southeast Botanical Gardens are an excellent venue for garden parties and wedding receptions.

The café offers quick pick-me-ups after your walk. Including pure soy wax candles and incense that brings your home the beautiful scent of a flowering field, the gift shop has an array of products as a memento of your visit.

A new restaurant will open on the premises on Oct. 1, 2013 that will be a great spot for relaxing dining with friends, families and loved ones.

Please note that pets are not allowed in the park unless they are guide dogs.
